Cheap Things to Do in Mississippi to Celebrate the 4th of July

Independence Day is the perfect time for celebration. Summer is in full swing, and it’s a great time to can get together with friends and family and throw a party in honor our nation’s birthday. But if your budget has you treading lightly for the holidays, you may want to be a little extra careful this year with your spendings. But don’t worry, there are plenty of things to do to celebrate July 4th in Mississippi that won’t break the bank.

Gulfport

The Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is a local favorite this time of year as residents and out-of-towners have been attending this international angling event for the last 70 years. There’s also plenty of fun stuff to do away from the waterfront, too. There’s fun carnival rides, delicious fried food, and live music all day long with a spectacular fireworks finale over the Gulf of Mexico to conclude the festivities.

Natchez

The city of Natchez has its own Independence Day tradition that draws residents and visitors from all over. Bystanders come prepared with coolers and blankets as they line up along the Natchez Bluffs to watch the fireworks light up the night above the mighty waters of the Mississippi River. The event is free and if you’re coming in from out of town, the historic B&Bs in the area offer affordable rooms so you and your family can stick around and relax over a long holiday weekend.

Oxford

Lafayette Oxford University hosts its own Fourth of July event in support of Oxford's Leap Frog Program, which is dedicated to promoting early childhood literacy. The community gathers every year for a day out filled with traditional Southern barbecue, live entertainment and enough fun and games to keep the entire family happy. And of course, be sure to stick around for a grand fireworks display at the end of the night.

Jackson

If you’re looking for an affordable and fun way to spend July 4th, Nandy's Candy in Jackson is the place to be.
