Labor Day Weekend: Taking the Holiday for a No-Spend Challenge

August 31, 2018 | By Emma Frost

It’s almost that time of year again – yes, Labor Day is once again just around the corner! Labor Day is a well-deserved break from the daily grind, and many of us plan on enjoying the fruits of our labor. But since it’s also one of the last 3-day weekends we get to enjoy before the holiday rush, there’s a lot of temptation to spend-spend-spend. If you’ve found yourself relying on a payday loan to get you through, it might not be the best time for a weekend getaway or luxury vaycay. If you’re looking for fun and an inexpensive way to spend your holiday weekend, look no further! Take the No-Spend Challenge this Labor Day weekend and check out these fun ways to celebrate without breaking the bank!

Barbeque Potluck

Barbeques are a summer staple, so why not draw your summer to a close with one last grill-out? A good old-fashioned BBQ can be a great way to get together with friends and family before school kicks back into full-gear and the holidays begin in earnest. Chances are someone close to you is already planning on having one – so why don’t you put your heads together and pool your resources to make the best Labor Day barbeque possible? Figure out your venue and what everyone can bring, get some beats going, and come together to celebrate a year of hard work with a relaxing day of grilling and grooving. A potluck-style BBQ celebration can help everyone save and have fun while doing it, and that can be just the kick your holiday season needs to start off on a positive note.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Labor Day is a day free from the cubicles and fluorescent lights. Instead of looking longingly out your window, get outside and replenish your reserves of vitamin D this Labor Day. If weather permits, why not step outside this Labor Day? Here are just a few fun examples you can do at your local park:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Biking
  • Fishing
  • Soccer
  • Volleyball
  • Basketball

If you have them, take your little ones along a biking trail. Meet up with a few friends or some family for a walk through a botanical gardens. Go hiking or shoot some hoops with your crew. Whatever gets you active. It’s good for your body and your mind to take time to reconnect with nature, and the best part is, if you already have the gear you need for your outdoor activities, you can do them for nothing at all.

Unwind in the Water

There’s something undeniably relaxing about being out in the water, whether you’re swimming in the pool, catching some waves, or fishing in a boat. It’s also another great way to stay active and outside this Labor Day without spending any money. Do you live near the ocean? If you do, then Labor Day might be the perfect time to hit the beach! Just remember that since it’s a long weekend, a lot of folks are going to have the same idea. If you’re not a fan of crowds, you may want to spend a little and go tubing instead. But if you don’t mind the bustle of beaching on a holiday weekend, beaches are fun, relaxing, and free (beyond parking fees).

Treat Yourself Stay-cation

It can be nice to plan a big getaway, but when you do, your bills will still be there waiting for you when you get back! Don’t stress yourself out over financing a flight or a road trip – skip the traffic and the hassle of traveling and opt for a stay-cation instead. If you’re not the biggest fan of the great outdoors, the great indoors can be just as good an escape. Use this weekend to explore your corner of Mississippi and discover your new favorite things to do without spending on a hotel room or car rental. You can also just throw some popcorn in the microwave and binge your favorite (or latest) Netflix obsession. It’s just what long weekends were made for, and it’ll cost a lot less than hitting the movies.

Give Back to Your Community

Can’t find a way to spend the weekend without spending your hard-earned money, too? If you’re a charitable person but you don’t have extra cash to donate, why not donate your time instead? Giving back to your community, whether it be a park or beach clean-up, setting up a rummage sale for your local church, or volunteering at your local soup kitchen, can be a rewarding way to spend your Labor Day without spending a dime. You’ll feel almost as good about all the money you saved by resisting the urge to splurge as you do about the people you help!
